A Tradition of Faith, Patriotism, and Service

The Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus represents a special commitment to the Order’s fourth principle: Patriotism. It brings together Catholic men who seek to express their love of God and country through faithful citizenship, service to the Church, and care for their neighbors.

Known as Sir Knights, Fourth Degree members serve as visible witnesses to the harmony between Catholic faith and responsible citizenship.

Our History

The Knights of Columbus was founded in 1882 by Blessed Michael McGivney, a Catholic priest who sought to strengthen Catholic families and provide mutual support for members of his community.
The Order began with three principles: Charity, Unity, and Fraternity. In 1900, Patriotism was added as the fourth principle, affirming that loyalty to God and loyalty to one’s country can stand together.
The Fourth Degree developed as a way for Knights to express this principle through service, ceremonial participation, and active Catholic citizenship.
Today, Fourth Degree members serve through assemblies throughout the world, continuing a tradition of faith, honor, and dedication to others.

Our Four Principals

These four principles guide our actions and define the way we serve.

Charity

We encounter Christ in others, and each encounter transforms our hearts

Unity

Rooted in our shared Catholic faith, our diverse brotherhood unites as one Church to strengthen and grow the Body of Christ

Fraternity

We foster a brotherhood rooted in Christ, inspiring one another to grow in holiness, faith, and virtue

Patriotism

Emphasizes patriotism by defending our nation’s moral and religious values and promoting responsible citizenship.

Who Are the Sir Knights?

Sir Knights are Catholic men who have embraced the Fourth Degree and its commitment to patriotism. We serve as honor guards and color corps at appropriate Church and civic events, support veterans, first responder and military families, and lead initiatives that promote Catholic values and responsible citizenship.

Mission and Vision of the Knights of Columbus

• Mission: Together, we’re empowering Catholic men to live their faith at home, in their parish, at work and in their community

• Vision: To be the leading Catholic men’s organization in promoting faith, family, and service, and to promote the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Our identity is rooted in faith. Our commitment is expressed through service. Our patriotism is lived through action
